About the city

Ivano-Frankivsk is a city with centuries-old history, ancient traditions, extraordinary artistic life and dynamic economy. 

The regional center is located at the intersection of two Bystrytsias, named: Bystrytsia Solotvynska and Bystrytsia Nadvirnianska. 

A good geographical location brings Ivano-Frankivsk closer not only to the EU Member States, but also creates favorable conditions for multilateral development.

If you look closely, you can notice that a view of the City Hall from above is placed in the basis of the logo, resembling an element of cross-stitch. There are also other symbols here: Stanislav Fortress (Bastion) - above, on the left - Galka, depicted on the coat of arms of Ivano-Frankivsk, on the right - a pen for calligraphy of Ivan Franko, and below - the symbol of the Carpathians. The main theme of the logo is "Ivano-Frankivsk - a city for life".

Ivano-Frankivsk is located in the southwest of Ukraine, distanced 150-300 km from the borders of Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia.

The territory of the city is 83.73 sq.km.

Population - 263.4 thousand people.

The city is connected by a network of highways and railways with the countries of Europe and the CIS.  Ivano-Frankivsk International Airport provides aircraft services of all types and has a capacity of 400 passengers/hour.

 with Romania (Porubne customs crossing) - 180 km,

 with Poland (Mostyska customs crossing) - 200 km,

 with Slovakia (Uzhgorod customs crossing) - 300 km,

 with Hungary (Chop customs crossing) - 320 km.

 The city of Ivano-Frankivsk has documented related relationships with 25 local self-government bodies, including cities in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Georgia, Portugal, the United States, and China.

Ivano-Frankivsk is the first city of Ukraine to become a member of the Association of European Municipalities "Energie-cites" (Energy City), also a member of the Association of Cities of Ukraine, which maintains close relations with the Council of European Cities and Regions, the International Union of Communities and  Organization of the Twin Cities, a member of the Sustainable Development Cities Network of Ukraine according to the Aalborg Charter, a member of the Association of European Blacksmith Cities.  The city is a signatory to the Agreement of Mayors of European Cities.

There are 2 honorific representative offices in Ivano-Frankivsk - Lithuania and Hungary.


For the work in the context of integration and promotion of European values, Ivano-Frankivsk has received all four high awards of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe – the European Diploma, the Flag of Honour, the Plaque of Honour, and in 2018 the highest award of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe – the Europe Prize.

Today, Ivano-Frankivsk is one of the most dynamic cities in the region. Both the economic and humanitarian sectors of the city are actively developing.

Rating agencies have confirmed the positive work of the economic sector of the city. “Credit-Rating” agency developed the Investment passport of Ivano-Frankivsk city, and on August 31, 2018, it was decided to increase the level of investment attractiveness of the city to the highest "uaINV5".

Ivano-Frankivsk has won the first place in the transparency of the investment sector of the 100 largest cities of Ukraine, which was conducted by the Ukrainian representation of «Transparency International» anti-corruption network within the «Transparent cities» program.

Companies with foreign investments are operating successfully: LLC "Electrolux Ukraine", LLC "Tyco Electronics Ukraine Limited" and SE "Karpaty" (project "APTIV").

Due to the positive investment climate that has existed in the city for many years, the successful activity of foreign investment enterprises, the volume of foreign direct investment per unit of population is much higher in Ivano-Frankivsk than in any other city of Ukraine, as well as in some regional centres with similar population size (1913 USD).

The city's investors are 44 countries of the world. About 96.4% of the total share capital is contributed from the EU countries.

An important factor in the relative resilience of the regional centre's economy to fluctuations in the country's economy is the orientation of Ivano-Frankivsk exporting enterprises, mainly to the markets of European countries.

In particular, in the regional centre, the amount of export of goods to the EU countries is about 60% of the total volume of export by the city. Foreign trade partners were non-residents from 89 countries. The largest export deliveries of goods from the regional centre were made to Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, and Denmark. Mechanical and electrical machinery (51.6% of exports) and animal products (32.8%) were the main export deliveries of the oblast centre.

Ivano-Frankivsk actively cooperates with international financial organizations such as EBRD, World Bank, SIDA (Swedish International Development Agency), NEFCO (Nordic Environmental Finance Corporation), E5R, European Investment Bank, and participates in 20 international projects of the European Union, USAID, PROMIS Projects, Cross-Border Cooperation Programs: Poland-Belarus-Ukraine and Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine, UNESCO Program, Danube Transnational Program and others.

Ivano-Frankivsk is a city with significant industrial and economic potential. There are 3891 economically active business entities in the oblast centre, which is 149 units per 10,000 population. The share of large enterprises was 0.1% of the total, medium - 3.3%, small - 96.6%.

The volume of sold products (goods, services) by the city enterprises amounted to UAH 42.7 billion. The share of large enterprises in the total sales amounted to 21.5%, medium - 49.9%, small - 28.6%.

It is noteworthy that Ivano-Frankivsk ranks 5th among the regional centres of Ukraine in the number of small enterprises per 10 thousand of the existing population, as well as the first place in the number of small and medium-sized enterprises per 10 thousand of the population among the regional centres with similar population size.

In Ivano-Frankivsk, there are 38 tourist enterprises, 48 hotel-type establishments with a total capacity of about 1800.

Ivano-Frankivsk is a city of festivals.  Traditionally, about 15 festivals take place annually in the regional centre, including International Christmas Festival “Koliada na Maizliah”, the international festivals "Carpathian Space" and "Blacksmith's Festival", festivals " Medy Prykarpattia", "Grapes and Wines Festival", "Bread and Cheese Festival", exhibition-fair of folk artists works "Prykarpatskiy vernissage", ethno-festival "Kray.ka ".

Ivano-Frankivsk has a distinct competitive advantage - a high level of education, science and general culture of the population.  Of the total population, 13% (33.8 thousand, of which more than 2 thousand are foreigners) are students studying at higher educational establishments of the city of I-IV accreditation levels: 5 universities and institutes, 11 - colleges, technical colleges and vocational colleges.

Ivano-Frankivsk Universities are ranked high among Ukrainian higher education institutions and are active in international activities.

The National Technical University of Oil and Gas operates a science and technology park. Its task is to promote the introduction of many modern energy-saving technologies and know-how into the economy of the city and the region.

Ivano-Frankivsk is a city of sports and physical culture. More than 50 kinds of sport (Olympic and non-Olympic) are developing in the city; 13 youth sports schools and more than 60 sports clubs and organizations are successfully operating.

Since gaining independence, the leading athletes of the city in the Olympic team of Ukraine were participants of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

Every year, the athletes of the city win over 200 medals of various grades at the European, Olympic and non-Olympic sports championships.

Ivano-Frankivsk is a pearl of the Carpathian region, a city with Galician charm and European traditions.
